Growing up.....

In what specific ways did Anne change during her months in the annex? To what extent
are these changes in response to her situation in hiding, and to what extent are these
changes part of growing up?

  1. Anne Frank was in the middle of her adolescent stage when she spent the days in hiding. Not only she changed physically but also mentally. The hard environment and experiences had made her feel more faster independent of herself than usually other girls do. She says, "Although I'm only fourteen, I know quite well what I want, I know who is right and who is wrong, I have my opinions, my own ideas and principles, and although it may sound pretty mad from an adolescent, I feel more of a person than a child, I feel quite independent of any one". And this was because she had to face the difficult task of changing herself, alone.

She used quarrel a lot and clash into each other with her mother. As she grew, she still though that they didn't understand each other but she became more mature, grown wiser and became able to control herself. Also, attitude towards Mrs. Van Daan changed. She became able to see her good sides and understood that it's not only her fault that they quarrel so much.

Also, she finds love in Peter, sixteen years boy who also lives in hiding. She finds comfort of her loneliness in him. Although adults didn't like them getting too close together, she penetrated her way.

  2. As she spent her teenager life in the secret annex located in her father's office building, she changed a lot in her attitude to others compared to when she first came to the secret annex.

On Saturday, 22 January, 1944, she had written that how people changed and see the difference in people's attitude or behaviors.(page. 139)

She felt that Peter was stupid, lazy, etc but as she spent time with Peter and stayed in the same building with him,she changed her attitude about Peter and fell in love with him and felt that Peter was a darling boy.
She hated Mrs. Van Daan as she treated Anne like she was stupid and she also compared her with her sister.
However Ann began to talk to and be closer with Mrs.Van Daan as she fell in love with Peter. That made her mother start to become jealous of Mrs.Van Daan.

She hated her parents because they treated Anne as a child and her mother liked Margot more than her so she had written in her diary how she felt about her mother and how her mother acted stupid. However as she read through what she had written in her diary, she began to feel that she had been so mean to her mother and she started to think she had to stop writing bad things about her mother.

She also changed her attitude about her father. At first, she thought her father was the nicest or best person in her life but as she started to grow up, she started to feel like her father treated her as a child.

She also changed to having plenty of time to think and reflect on who she was, Anne knows herself and what she wants as she grew up.

  3. Anne changed to a young woman from a child during two years in the Secret Annex. She was treated as a child by everyone which she didn't like.

Her difficult situation made more complicated by her puberty.
She had difficult relationships with her family, Mr and Mrs.Van Daan and Mr.Dussel. she used to quarrel with them, especially with her mother. As she grow, she became more mature and by becoming more mature, she was able to control and calm herself. She became a sensitive girl from an innocent and petty girl.

She also developed the relationship with Peter, a teenage boy who lives in same hiding. But both of their parents didn't approve to have a special relationship.

  5. Anne was a young girl in the beginning but she turns into a young woman while in hiding.

After she went to the hiding place "Secret Annexe", she had to live with the people who are not her family. She couldn't go anywhere and it caused her to communicate a lot with the people in the hiding. She had a lot of experiences and learned a lot of important things from them. All of these caused her to grow up faster. For example, she was doing and saying whatever she wanted but she finds that makes people feel bad and that is childish, so she tries not to do that and learn how to behave people. She grows really fast and she also says that everyone has good side and bad side.

She also changes physically. Her body changes and period comes.

  6. During the time that Anne lived in the Secret Annexe, she started to turn into a young woman. She went into hiding as a little talkative girl, but over the time she started to internally and physically change not only because she was growing up but also according to her circumstances.
Anne started to become less ignorant and tried and did understand what the adults were saying and meant. She started to realize that she wasn't always right and that her opinions weren't always necessary and correct. She started to acknowledge her mistakes and sometimes understood why she was treated or thought of the way she was.
This was of course more difficult for her than other girls, because she had no friend or family member she could talk with about this, except her diary. Usual girls don't have to keep their emotions and feelings hidden and would still have a lot of hope on their melancholy days.
One major and inspiring change was that she believed that in each person there is always something positive and that everyone wasn't perfect.

  7. Anne started of as a childish girl of thirteen years who was complaining about small things to her father. She also never used to realize her mothers love for her and used to think that she was rude. She also landed up into fights with Mr.Dussel, Mrs.Van Daan and Peter. A few months after she turns fourteen her mind starts to mature. She calmed down her anger.

She reduced her quarrels with Mrs.Van Daan. She also started to realize her mothers love for her and started loving her back. She stops fighting with Peter and creates an affection towards him. These are some of the responses which she received in hiding.

  8. Anne changed a lot during her time in the Annexe. Her behavior evlolved in a positive way, even though the times were hard and she grew up in a confined area without the normal type of surroundings a growing child would require. She grew from a whining, typical infant, with selfish feelings and actions, and lack of general view a parent requires, into a young adult, caring about people and seeing not only her side of the story but trying to vizualize all the aspects of the dilemna in question and analyzing them before acting in response to her thoughts of what she finds would be the appropriate course of action. I find she changed the most of all the inhabitants of the Annexe during their time as escapees. I admire how even though she grew up in an unsocialized environment and in perpetual danger, she understood the concept to maturing and decided to transform from a mewling infant to a new, improved, Anne, while facing the war being waged around her as well as the problems a teen encounters.

  9. Anne became a whole new and different person while hiding in the Secret Annexe. Her changes influenced the mood and people around her as well. Anne changed physically and mentally as the years passed by in the Annexe.
Most of the changes she went through were part of growing up. Such as her fighting with her mother grew worse but soon she was able to calm down and be mature about it. She also wanted to be independent because she had her own ways and choices and she knew what she wanted.
As she grew up in the Secret Annexe, she got a taste of a different environment from other teenagers. There were many rules and regulations in the Annexe to keep them safe and not get caught. From the influence of the people around her in the Annexe, Anne chose the way she wanted to grow up.

  10. In the beginning Anne was a flirt, chatterbox, selfish feelings, and actions. She wasn't mature in the beginning of the story. When she knew that she was going into hiding it scared her. She didn't really get along with her mother. And the Van Daans. At first she thought that she wouldn't like Peter in the beginning but she did. She has been hiding since she was 13 years old. In the middle and end in her diary. She starts to get along with her mother and Peter. She loved Peter as one of her best friends because she felt alone and scared when she was in the " Secret Annexe". But most of the changes she went through hiding is part of growing up and becoming a young lady. She also wanted to be a writer and to be independent about it. She also learned that if you look and love the one's around you then it not that bad.Anne is a inspiration to everyone around the world. She is a positive and a strong young lady.
