Thinking in a positive manner....

Consider Otto Frank’s statement to the fellow residents of the annex: “We’re lucky. We’re
really very lucky.” Why does he say this and what impact does it have on the residents of
the annex?

  1. Otto Frank said that "We're lucky. We're really very lucky." Anne herself also mentioned in the diary, comparing with other Jews who is suffering under the pressure of anti-semitism, "How fortunate we are here, so well cared and undisturbed." Eight members of Secret Annexe had a better life compared to other Jews, who has been forced into concentration camps. They also had support of good-natured people like Miep, Koophius and Henk, and had enough food to feed themselves.

Still the life was different from what used to be and much harder. They were always under stress of fearing that one might discover them and they also longed to go out and breathe fresh air because they were all packed together in small area. Anne said that "Now, we are so surrounded by danger and darkness that we bump against each other, as we search desperately for a means of escape." These stress and pressure had caused them to be in rotten mood and constant quarrelling.

But being in bad atmosphere and being furious in each other does not help them. Complains will cause quarrel, everybody will get annoyed and complains. Too much stress can result into sickness too. It's better to think positively and remain hopeful. Thinking that themselves are lucky, will change their attitude towards the life in hiding. I think Otto Frank said this statement to cheer everybody up and make them think positively and appreciate what they have.

  2. Anne's family had to hide in the hiding place when the S.S have sent a call up notice to Margot. Their daily life became more harder as they compared all the things that they used to do in the past.

As Anne's family hide in the Secret Annex, Pim(Otto Frank) said “We’re lucky. We’re really very lucky." and Anne agreed.

Anne felt that she was luckier than millions of people and the Secret Annex is a paradise as she compared with other Jewish who were not in hiding must be living.

When she looked outside through the window, Anne saw many of the Jewish were taken by the German soldiers to the concentration camp and she heard many Jewish were crying outside. She also heard the news from Elli or from a radio that Jewish friends are being taken away by the dozen.

As she looked those people, she felt she is lucky but she would find it hard to live in the Secret Annex without help from Elli, Miep, Henk, Mr. Koophuis and Mr. Kraler because they supplied foods, clothes, books, etc for eight people who were hiding in Secret Annex.

Sometimes, Anne looked outside through window though that she wasn't allow to do it but she watched people who were walking on the road during the evening and watched moon during the late night.

She felt lonely, worried, sadness, etc as she had no one else to talk about her problems but as she felt in love with Peter, her mind started to change into positive mind and that showed how Anne liked him.

If I was Anne and living in the hiding place, I would think in a negative mind as thinking why I am Jewish! but Anne thought in a positive way and worried other Jewish people though she is in hiding place and don't know when the German Solders come and take them away.

  3. People in the Secret Annex had way much better life than people who were sent to Concentration Camps. They could live with their loving family and had help from people in the warehouse who weren't Jews. But they couldn't have their lives in good environment compared to normal people.
Jewish people in concentration camp, they couldn't eat, drink and families were separated away.

Living with other family in the small house is not easy for everyone. They had too much stress and irritation because they couldn't go out, make sounds and have liberty...etc. People had to hear the quarrel at least once a day.

Some people think they are unlucky living in hiding. The statement what Otto Frank said, helped them to think in positive way. Thinking in positive way will help everyone to encourage.

  4. Otto frank says " we're lucky. We're really very lucky " because the Jews are even taken away to be killed but Otto frank and his family up is in this place called secret Annex which keeps them safe. And there some really kind non-Jews people who are helping them from outside.

They help them with food supplies, presents to make them happy in that sad moment and they gave the place for them to hide.

It is really hard for them to live n a small place like that because if one catches cold it will start spreading and everyone will get it, not only that, food. There won't be enough of food for everyone. With all those sadness they always try to make each other happy.

  5. Otto Frank says that they were lucky because they were not being tortured like other Jews in the concentration camps. They were kept safe in the "Secret Annex" because it would be difficult for the Nazi soldiers to track the residents down.

  6. When Otto Frank says "We're lucky. We're really very lucky" I think he says it to bring the members in the Secret Annexe into a positive mood and to get them to think and be grateful for how their lives are at the present.
They live in a pleasant place, not like their old house before, but a place much more comfortable than the other Jews who have been taken away or are living in fear.
If you think about it, they are very lucky because they're in hiding and are not getting tortured in concentration camps with millions of other Jews. Anne often writes about how hopeless she feels for the Jews, like her friend Lies. She mentions in her diary that she sees the faces of scared and broken Jews outside the window, but can't do anything to help them, but she is grateful she's not in their place.
When Mr. Frank talk about them being lucky, it gives a positive impact on the members of the Annexe. They realize how fortunate they are to be in hiding.

  7. As always Otto Frank stayed positive, encouraging and looked at things differently and understood the situations positively. By him saying "We're lucky. We're really very", some members of the Secret Annexe did believe him and continued thinking like him. But others had different opinions and would think in their way.
Anne for example, continued to follow her father's example in staying positive and told herself and Kitty that they should be content about their circumstance. Anne's dream of her friend, Lies, made her realize how lucky they were and how her friends and millions other Jews were suffering. Also Mr. Kraler, Mr. Koophius and Miep agreed with Daddy, because they knew how terrible the times were for the other Jews.
Sadly, not all the residents thought in that way. Mr. Van Daan, Mrs. Van Daan and Mrs. Frank sometimes believed that they could be luckier and did not appreciate so much what they had.
Anne did obtain a lot from her farther because she was always so positive and full of gratitude.

  8. The two families, Vaan Daans and Franks move into the " Secret Annex" for hiding from the nazis. The door of the office was being covered with a bookshelf so then the gestapos do not figure out that there were people living in the office.

Mr Frank says that the residents in the "Secret Annex" were very lucky because he knew that they were fortunate enough not to be taken away from the Nazi soldiers. They were lucky because they escaped the torture given to Jews in the concentration camps. It was very difficult for the Nazi soldiers to discover their residence.

His saying created a positive impact on the residents as they realized the importance of the annex. They also realized that living with lesser luxuries was better than being taken away into one of the concentration camps and being away from the families.

  9. Otto Frank stated, and quite truthfully, that: "We’re lucky. We’re
really very lucky.” The way the inhabitants of the Secret Annexe lived was cruel, with harsh conditions, but even though their lives were bad they could have been much worse, as they find out after they are captured and brought to concentration camps where all died exept Otto.
As I have already stated in my previous texts, my favorite character in Anne Frank was Pim, because he supports and keeps the spirit of the house alive. So even when the refugees bicker about things here and there, and are sad or annoyed or angry at the lack of something, he looks at the bigger picture and sees that they have a lot more than many other people at times like these and should be helping each other out instead of bickering. He is trying to knock a little sense into the others.
He is the supporting element required, the fifth leg of the table to support in times of need, the ray of hope in the dark night sky. He tries making the thers feel good before even asking about himself. He will takes the worst potatoes at meals, try and quell quarrels, and is overall the general peacemaker of the Annexe, and I think if there was one character I had to choose to be, I would pick him. I think they were even more lucky because Pim was there to encourage them, always being optimistic.
