In hiding......

Why do the residents of the annex celebrate holidays and birthdays while they are in
hiding? How do these events contribute to a sense of “normality” in an abnormal
environment and why is that important?

  1. Even Anne, her family, Van Daan family and Dussel is in hiding, they celebrated holidays and birthdays. That could not be performed like the way they did before they came to the hiding, but there was always some kind of presents or entertainment during holiday or birthdays.

While many of the entertainments were restricted in hiding, the celebrations and birthday was the time when they can have fun like other normal people. Although the supply was small, they used their creativity to decorate the houses or make the presents. On the St.Nicholas day of 1943, Anne planed a surprise performance which all member if Secret Annexe had enjoyed. On Anne's father's birthday, she gave a story that she wrote. I'm sure that everyone was pleased of receiving their gifts even though it is not something expensive or useful, because many was cordial gift.

Holidays and birthdays were the time residents of the hiding could have a fun and having fun was important. They could not always be sand and moan about their situation and that will degrade human spirit and the atmosphere will be bad, which will make them irritated. They should remain helpful, and celebrating holidays and doing normal thing could make them feel positive.

  2. In the hiding place, they had celebrated Jewish festivals and people's birthdays.

Anne had written about Chanuka, St. Nicholas, christmas, and each person's birthday that what they received. They did this to have some excitement and things to look forward to or to have a celebrate each other. They wanted to pretend that they were back in their old house doing all the things that they used to do. They gave each other presents and poems in special days. I think those days were important to them because everyone forgot about their worries for a little bit.

Anne liked a poem that Anne received from her daddy for her birthday present. It was nice what her daddy had written it to Anne.

  3. Even Anne's family, Van Dann's family and Dussel were in hiding which was in abnormal environment, they celebrated the special holidays and their birthdays such as Chanuka and St. Nicholas Day. They gave presents and ate cakes. But they couldn't celebrate like the way they did in the old house.

They could have fun and I think people were pleased to get presents even their presents were cheap. I think if they didn't have these celebrations, they couldn't endure to live in hiding. So it was extremely important for them to have celebrations, otherwise they get stressed or irritated.

  4. Certainly, some festivals and holidays could not be celebrated in hiding, as you could celebrate them outside of hiding, often lacking entertainment and mood, but the members in hiding celebrated Chanukah - A Jewish festival, St. Nicholas, Christmas, New Year 1944, to name a few, as well as the birthday's of the individual members in hiding (such as Mrs. van Dann's B-day), as Anne mentioned in her dairy.

In fact, while they were hiding, Anne for the first time recieved a present for Christmas. The adults were supplied with alcohol for Christmas and the children/tenns were given small gifts and food. Otherwise, Christmas and New Year 1944 went by fast for them.

At least festivals, holidays and birthday's gave the arguing and fighting a break, often the members in hiding could enjoy a fun and relaxed evening. Making the atmosphere in the secret annex enjoyable, as Anne described in her dairy.

  5. Anne, Anne's family, Van Danns and Dussel are hiding from the Nazi. They celebrated the anniversary of Mrs. Van Dan and Anne's mom. They even celebrated the Jewish festivals, St.Nicholas, Christmas, New Year.

To make them happy they all got presents for Christmas, mrs. Van Dan got presents for her birthday and so did Anne's mom. They gave poems for each other. Holiday, birthdays, presents and poems made them happy.

  6. Anne's family, Van Dann family and Mr.Dussel, there were 8 people in Secret Annex. They all couldn't live happily like they were in their old house but they were trying to make it similar as much as they can, so they celebrated holidays like Chanuka and St. They also celebrated their birthdays. They gave presents to each other and ate cake. They couldn't celebrate them in the way they used to before they come to hiding but they could still have fun. Having fun made them feel better. They were always under stress, so the holidays and their birthdays were extremely important and special days for them.

  7. Anne and the other 7 members in hiding often go through an oppressive and blunt day. The only joyful thing to look forward to for them is holidays and birthdays where they can celebrate and be blissful as if they're back living their normal life that they've left behind to go into hiding.
Anne and the residents in the Secret Annexe live in an abnormal environment due to the constant mood changing of the members in the Annexe and the war happening. Celebrating birthdays and holidays is what normal people do and that is the feeling that the members in the Secret Annexe want everyone to feel. It's important to them because they also want to have fun while in misery.

  8. The residents living in the "Secret Annex" celebrated Chanukah, st.Nicholas day, Christmas and some residents' birthdays.

The celebrations contribute a lot to the sense of normality because as normal people even they deserve to celebrate their birthdays and festival. When they are in hiding they wanted to have some happiness by celebrating festivals like how they used to celebrate in their old houses.

Celebrating festivals and birthdays are small things which brings happiness in a melancholy state of mind. Therefore celebrating festivals tenaciously contributes to complete sense of normality.

  9. The eight members of the Secret Annexe and even their helpers celebrated birthdays and important holidays, since they wanted their life to be as normal as possible. They thought that it was vital for them to not loose any normality so hopefully after the war they could go back to their regular live.
Another reason was that Anne, her family, the Van Daans and Mr. Dussel where always quarreling and those celebrations brought a smile back to their face. It made them believe in hope again even though they were fully despaired.
The helpers were extremely generous to provide a few presents for holidays and birthdays. The residents weren't able to fix up anything extraordinary but they did shipped in a little bit with their food and other supplies.
Of course celebrating these festive days wasn't like they did in their customary homes and not with same kinda luxury, but the joyful spirit was still there and that's what mostly mattered.

  10. The residents of the Secret Annexe, according to Anne, celebrate holidays quite gleefully. It is a time of joy, a brief pause in the continuous life in uncertainty that enfolds the refugees in its grasp. I believe that celebrations were very important to the inhabitants because it gave them a brief pause in the stress, where people didn't argue but agreed and celebrated together. It was a time without too many arguments and quarrels.
Living in a confined area can be excrutiatingly painful, and celebrating contributes to a sense of normality that infants (and adults) require to live peacefully. Celebrating gives the inhabitants of the Annexe a small snippet of what it would be like to live in the outside world, celebrating as a family with friends, giving presents to each other and eating cake.
I believe that celebrating is important to all of us, because it rewards us for all the pain and effort we have given during our lives. It congratulates us for the hard work and gives us a sense of joy. If the was one thing that I had to keep in this world, I would say celebrations.
